What You Will Learn

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a learner-centered approach to teaching English as a
foreign or second language for adult learners to use in their specific fields, such as science,
technology, medicine, leisure, and academic learning. This course is designed for students
who want to learn how to design ESP courses and programs in an area of specialization such
as English for business, Civil Engineering, Academic Purposes, and for health service
purposes. This course will also introduce them to ESP instructional strategies, materials
adaptation and development, and evaluation.

At the end of the course, the students can:

  • Explain the nature of ESP accurately,
  • Conduct needs analysis to gather information related to the contexts in which English is used and English linguistic data, in terms of language functions and technical terms, in various units in the fields under observation and survey accurately and appropriately,
  • Compile, interpret, and present the obtained information on the stakeholders’ needs of the targeted ESP area appropriately,
  • Write a report on the results of the needs analysis accurately and appropriately.
